Chimpanzee Exploited by Portfolio Magazine

In the December 2007 issue of the Conde Nast publication Portfolio Magazine, a story titled "The Evolution of an Investor" featured photos of a chimpanzee reading a newspaper and engaging in office antics. The chimpanzee was also featured on the cover of the magazine. You can view the photographs here.

What you can do:

Please contact Conde Naste and express your disappointment in its support of animal cruelty. Let them know that exploiting an endangered species for a cheap laugh just isn’t funny.

I am writing to voice my strong disappointment that the December 2007 issue of Portfolio Magazine featured a young chimpanzee “actor” on the cover and in photographs accompanying the article "The Evolution of an Investor". It is well-documented that chimpanzees are trained for entertainment through physical and psychological abuse, and endure irreversible trauma when they are taken away from their mothers at birth.

“Retirement” at age 6 or 7 usually means being cast off to roadside zoos or other substandard facilities. Further, chimpanzees are an endangered species, and using them for entertainment seriously hampers conservation efforts. Please make the responsible decision never to exploit great apes in your publication again. I look forward to hearing from you on this urgent matter.
