Thank you to the show Harry's Law
January 13, 2012
On Wednesday night, NBC aired an episode of Harry's Law that presented a case about a gorilla being granted "personhood." The main character argued against exploiting great apes for human entertainment and advocated for granting personhood to the gorilla in this case. The episode introduced these issues to millions of Americans! Although the story is fiction, the episode does talk about The Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act, which is indeed in Congress right now. This is huge news for a primetime drama to be speaking about nonhuman apes as persons.
Although the full episode is not available online at this time, reports say that the gorilla we see in the episode is actually CGI, not unlike techniques Hollywood used in the recent Planet of the Apes movie. You can watch the Harry's Law clip featuring the personhood discussion here: Gorilla's in the Court
We would like to thank NBC for their progressive discussion on the treatment of apes in our country. You can help by sending a short thank you to the company expressing your appreciation. Please send your thank you e-mails to NBC’s contact form (select Harry's Law in the drop menu).
This development would not have been accomplished without a growing public awareness of the inherent cruelty involved in exploiting great apes. Your involvement in this movement is essential – keep writing and spreading the word!
Sample Text for your email to NBC:
I am writing to express my appreciation for NBC's recent episode of Harry's Law, which introduced arguments for granting personhood to nonhuman apes. I was so happy to see the show express forward thinking in our treatment toward animals. The discussion of the Great Ape and Cost Savings Act was excellent, and I hope that this exposure will help those nonhuman apes in need of our help
Sincerely,
