Jon Stewart gets it right!
August 4, 2011
Last year, Jon Stewart published a book, Earth: A Visitor’s Guide to the Human Race. The front cover features an image of a chimpanzee sitting side by side with Stewart. We wrote to Stewart, the book publisher, and had you express your comments to Stewart as well.
Although we never received a statement from Stewart or Comedy Central's The Daily Show, earlier this week Stewart interviewed Frieda Pinto for the upcoming movie, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and made a comment about chimpanzees in entertainment.
"Real chimpanzees, as amazing as they are, are incredibly powerful and unpredictable. They're not meant to, let's say, dress up and play the drums for us."
This is excellent progress and demonstrates that there is a growing public awareness about the plight of chimpanzees in entertainment. Please feel free to send a thank you to Stewart by leaving a comment on The Daily Show Facebook page, or by submitting a comment to their contact form. (Be sure to select "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" under the topic drop menu).
The Rise of the Planet of the Apes movie premieres tomorrow, August 5th. There were no live apes used in the filming of this movie! See this great review, or better yet—go see it yourself and let us know what you think.
Sample Thank You Comment:
Thank you for mentioning on your August 1 show that apes should not be used in entertainment. You were exactly right in saying that they are "incredibly powerful and unpredictable." They simply do not belong in entertainment, so thank you again for pointing out that we should not be exploiting these amazing beings for a cheap laugh.
